Coffee aroma may have stress-busting
- Just the smell of freshly brewed coffee can help relieve stress, say researchers who studied the effects of coffee aroma on sleep-deprived rats. Roasted coffee bean aroma created higher activity in a number of genes in the rat brain, including some that produce proteins with antioxidant activities, according to the study carried out by researchers at Seoul National University in South Korea and published recently in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry

Out Go the Ovaries? Not So Fast
In an era of evidence-based medicine, we tend to assume our doctors are going by the latest research when they decide to, oh, say, remove a woman's ovaries when performing a hysterectomy. Not so, says a new analysis published Tuesday in the Cochrane Review database. There haven't been any well-conducted studies to examine the health risks and benefits of removing the ovaries during the second most common surgery performed on women

Owners of Littleton-based Superior Products Home Improvements — a company specializing in siding, window replacement, decks and outdoor living areas — the family is switching gears to wine production, to benefit the Cancer League of Colorado.

New Treatment for Ovarian Cancer Discovered
According to a new study, published in the most recent issue of the journal Cancer Research, a new treatment for advanced ovarian cancer may have been discovered. Researchers from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, led by Dr. Anil K. Sood, professor in the Departments of Gynecologic Oncology and Cancer Biology, found that a new compound, named TG2 (transglutaminase G2), s associated with ovarian cancer.

Halle Berry to Lead Ovarian Cancer Awareness Campaign
She's fought off evil mutants as X-Men's Storm, but Halley Berry's next foe is the even deadlier: ovarian cancer. Halle Berry’s next public project: she's joining forces with The Callaway Golf Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation to do a print PSA campaign for ovarian cancer. Look for the ads in August.

Using Magenetic Nanoparticles To Combat Cancer
Scientists at Georgia Tech have developed a potential new treatment against cancer that attaches magnetic nanoparticles to cancer cells, allowing them to be captured and carried out of the body. The treatment, which has been tested in the laboratory and will now be looked at in survival studies, is detailed online in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Florida trip brings peace to woman with cancer
Lucille Holman, 69, is dying of cancer. It's her second bout with ­ovarian cancer, which had been in remission, but now has spread to her lungs. She endured a couple of ­chemotherapy treatments earlier this year, but decided in April to take a pass on any more.

15-year-old volunteer hopes he will inspire others in cause
For Cora Miller and grandson Joshua, helping with the local American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is a labor of love. Joshua doesn’t remember the first time he participated in the Relay; he was only 2 ˝ years old. His grandmother recalls, “He walked as many laps as anyone else.”

A good race, but it is a better cause
First I would like to congratulate Amy Boerema on her training and completion of the Naperville Triathlon. Her accomplishment is terrific. I enjoyed reading about her struggles with the training and the actual race day recollections. I was a spectator at this race. My children also participated in the race.
